What is Past Perfect Tense?

Past Perfect Tense is a verb tense that describes an action that was completed before another past event. It is often used in conjunction with Past Simple Tense to describe the order of events. For example, “I had eaten dinner by the time you came over.” Past Perfect Tense can also be used to emphasize how long ago something happened.

Formula

The formula of past perfect is very simple, you have to choose a “Subject” and add “Had” with “3rd Form of Verb” then add “Subject at the end. You will better understand the structure and examples of tense.

Formula: Subject + Had + Verb Third Form + Object

When We Can Use the Past Perfect Tense?

Past Perfect Tense is used when we want to show the order of two events that happened in the past, or it can indicate an event from really long ago. For example, “When the teacher arrived, the students had gone”. You can also change the sequence and write it in that way, “The students had gone, when the teacher arrived”. Both of sequence have the same meaning but the thing matter is, there are two events occurring in an order. You can’t use past perfect tense if there is only one event.

Simple/ Affirmative

Formula:  Subject + Had + Verb Third Form + Object

Examples in English

  • They had bought a new fridge
  • James had owned a house
  • Sara had left her mobile
  • Robert had completed his assignment
  • She had lost her money
  • He had won a lottery

Examples in Hindi

  • वे था खरीद लिया एक नया फ्रिज
  • जेम्स था स्वामित्व एक घर
  • सारा था बाएं उसकी मोबाइल
  • रॉबर्ट था पूरा किया हुआ उनके कार्यभार
  • वह था खोया उसकी धन
  • वह था जीत लिया ए लॉटरी

Negative

In the negative sentence, we add “Not” after the helping verb “Had”.

Formula: Subject + Had + Not + Verb 3rd Form + Object

  • She had not lost her money

Interrogative

For making Past Perfect Interrogative Sentence we put the helping verb “Had” at the start and then add “Subject” with “3rd Form of Verb” and “Object” with a question mark (?) at the end.

Interrogative Negative of Past Perfect Tense

In this type of sentence, we place the word “Had” at the start. After that, add “Subject” and “Not” with “Verb 3rd Form” plus “Object” and question mark “?” at the end.

Use of Before and After

The method of using “Before and After” in Past Perfect Tense is, first focus on what happened in the past, when you were taking action or making decisions, you would use the “before” clause. You would use “after,” however if you were talking about something that came after your decision was made or when something else influenced your choice of actions.

1. We had opened the shop before the customer came.

2. The guests had gone before I came to home.

1. After he had completed his work, he went to school.
